It is well known that there are different forms of artificial intelligence. However, there is some debate as to how to define AI. We are not all operating from the same definition of the term and while the foundation is generally the same, the focus of artificial intelligence shifts depending on the entity that provides the definition.

Here experts will join a panel to discuss different approaches to what AI means, how to define it and what this signals for the enterprise.

  • How can we define artificial intelligence?
  • The consequence of definition on business operations and processes
  • Delivering the vision: successfully communicating the function and value of AI in your enterprise

11:30 am - 12:10 pm AI IN PRACTICE: A Question of Trust and How to Maintain Public Confidence in AI Technology

Globally, discussions on AI are coalescing around questions of ethics, of governance and, ultimately, of trust. As the focus on governance as well as practical guidance in the specific areas of deployment increases, standards are likely to be part of the solution, as are adaptable principles-based approaches. In this talk, Jed will bring over will unpack the challenges and the world of standards and AI and how emergent work might be applicable, including that being led through JTC 1/SC42 – a global AI Standards Committee under the mantle of ISO and ISO.

  • AI requires responsible governance
  • Principles and standards-based frameworks provide some of the answers
  • We need to work locally, as well as globally to shape responses

12:10 pm - 12:50 pm AI IN PRACTICE: Early Experimentation of AI in Local Governments to Improve Service Efficiency

For Local Governments, sustaining a livable future means the quality of living for their citizens are at the top of the priority list and understanding the practical capabilities of AI are essential to invest in resources and services needed.

Learn about the early experimentation projects of AI in Local Governments from Matthew Schultz, President of the Smart Communities Association, as he draws from his 23 years+ experience and leadership expertise in smart city, connectivity, data, IoT and spatial visualisation.

- Use case examples:
  • Early object recognition from Video CCTV
  • Automated feature extraction from aerial imagery
  • AI in predictive analytics for improved asset management
  • AI and drones to improve crowd and traffic control for community events and festivals
- Identify the practical capabilities of AI to separate the hype
- Ensuring AI is used in an open and interoperable manner to simplify the collection process

12:50 pm - 1:50 pm NETWORKING LUNCH BREAK

1:50 pm - 2:30 pm CASE STUDY: Removing Harmful Predators In NZ - An Analytics and Visualisation Platform at the Department of Conservation NZ

The Department of Conservation in NZ is partnering with a number of not-for-profit, private and public sector partners to support New Zealand’s agenda and drive for a ‘Predator Free NZ by 2050’’. The partnership includes, amongst others, The Instillery and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as a number of important local government and LWI partners. Given the geographical location of NZ, predators i.e. stoats, weasels, ferrets, hedgehogs and others, have long posed a threat to the nation’s biodiversity which is now, in some places, at high risk of extinction.

Through these partnerships, there is a team of dedicated professionals leveraging cloud capabilities to analyse big biodiversity data sets collected and analysed across each and every trap and property in NZ. In this session, gain insight into:

  • Applying algorithms that uses captured big data assets from every property in New Zealand and visualizing it into actionable insights for future investment decisions
  • Developing a roadmap based on current predator control campaigns and programs to target high risk environments
  • Insights into investment decisions and long term commitments to meet the outcomes being sought by Predator Free 2050
  • Pain points around technologies needed to achieve ‘Predator-Free NZ’ by 3050

2:30 pm - 3:00 pm PANEL DISCUSSION: Addressing the Risk and Ethical Concerns Associated with AI adoption to Ensure a Sustainable and Responsible Future for Digital Innovation

As systems become more capable to interpret, analyse and translate information, the scope for AI expands and with it, brings new territory for ethical and risk related discussions. This panel will bring together leaders in the Government industry to assess the challenges around adopting AI, finding the right balance between innovation and human satisfaction, future-proofing employment prospects and prioritizing equality.

  • Paradigm shift of risk perception as technologies emerge and what are the protections needed to address societal concerns?
  • How do we ensure the set of policies created will protect communities from ethical concerns i.e. un/underemployment, inequality, human-to-machine interaction, algorithmic bias, robotic rights and more
  • AI Implications on risk mitigation, management, governance frameworks and innovation

3:30 pm - 4:10 pm Augmenting Intelligence: Investing in Human Collective Intelligence at the Department of Human Services

DHS invested early into developing capability in the augmented intelligence to improve service delivery with Virtual Assistants, language translation, data analytics, and IVR. The Department has extensive processes in place to identify and mitigate risks, yet the scalability, speed and reach of augmented intelligence technologies and potential systemic impacts on the community, both positive and negative. In this session, gain insight into what has been achieved to date and explore upcoming possibilities in this pivotal time of the ‘Intelligence’ Era:

  • The launch of the Augmented Intelligence Centre of Excellence for Government by Hon. Minister Michael Keenan in November 2018
  • The AI CoE brings together those at the forefront of cutting-edge technology research and development within the Australian community and government to create and deliver world-class outcomes in governance and service delivery innovation.
  • The need to develop frameworks including AI risk and ethics, accountability and auditability, and vendor engagement strategies, as well as a responsibility to contribute to the management of this transition.
