Defence industry resistant to AI revolution

New report finds the struggle to keep pace with innovation could mean a new era of disruption and opportunity for defence industry

With artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics on the cusp of revolutionising global business, the defence industry could be at risk of falling behind if vendors cannot adapt at pace, according to a recent deep-dive study by the AIIA Network.

The report, to be published in December, examines the role of intelligent enterprise technologiesincluding AI, the internet of things (IoT), robotic process automation (RPA), machine learning and data analysiswithin the future defence industry, looking at which providers are investing, which are notand considering where opportunities might lie.

Almost half of the defence professionals surveyed said they expected the impact of intelligent technological innovation to significantly affect the wider defence industry over the next two years, however the majority of those surveyed anticipated major hurdles to implementationwith internal culture within the defence industry found to be a particularly debilitating factor.

Other concerns include organizations’ struggles to keep up with the rapid pace of change and the inherent challenges involved in upgrading legacy systems.

The full report entitled ‘AI 2020: The future of defence and security’ is being produced in association with Defence IQ, a portal dedicated to global defence industry intelligence.
